Often credited as the originators of the death metal branch style called Grindcore, revolt experts Autopsy had a short merely, erm, colourful account. Founded by ex-Death drummer Christ Reifert shortly afterwards he resettled to San Francisco in 1987, the group was rounded out by guitarists Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles and bassist Ken Sorvari, with Reifert likewise treatment vocal duties. Signed to U.K.-based indie judge Peaceville on the strength of 1988's Critical Madness demonstration, they released their debut Severed Survival iI days later. Mirroring the work of fledgeling English Grindcore groups like Napalm Death and Carcass, the album combined traditional death alloy vocals and aggression with slower, grinding riffs and absolutely repellent splatter-gore lyrics. It likewise boasted a cameo from some other Death ammonia alum, bassist Steve DiGiorgio, only Steve Cutler was handling the iV drawing string work load come 1991 -- a busy class which saw them issuance iI E.P.'s, Fiend for Blood and Retribution for the Dead as well as long participant named Mental Funeral. None of these seemed to assistance the band's crusade, however, and neither did 1992's Acts of the Unspeakable album (featuring succeeding bassist Josh Barohn), which is mayhap charles Herbert Best remembered for cover art so shameful, Australian custom officials immediately confiscated all units upon arrival. A long period of inactivity followed, just Autopsy finally returned for a final gratuitous and scatological bye-bye via 1995's Shitfun album, featuring still some other bassist, one Freeway Migliore. Finally slaked that they'd wreaked enough mayhem, Reifert and Coralles touched on to a newfangled project called Abscess and the other after united Nuclear Assault's Danny Lilker in the Ravenous. 2001 saw the release of a best of set entitled Torn from the Grave, just assuming this will wrap up the band's trajectory may just encourage them to ready a rejoinder (so let's not and say we did).
